  • Trial date set for man charged in deadly accident that killed a Mishawaka mother

    A trial date was set Tuesday for the man charged for a fatal accident in Osceola that killed a Mishawaka mother of three.Kyle Papa, 23, was in court today facing three felony and two misdemeanor charges after an accident that left Amanda Ezra dead from severe head trauma. Prosecutors say Papa was intoxicated when he was driving the van Ezra was traveling in the early morning hours of June 15, and say he left the scene after Ezra, 24, suffered fatal injuries.

  • Elkhart County vehicle crash injures man

    The Sheriff's Department is investigating a vehicle crash involving a motorcycle and a van at the intersection of State Road 13 and County Road 34. It happened at 1:48 in the afternoon.The motorcycle was traveling southbound on the state road when it collided with the van. The van was traveling eastbound on the county road and then turned onto the state road into the path of the motorcycle.The motorcyclist has severe injuries to his left leg and was not wearing a helmet.

  • Man calls police due to suspicious package

    A man called the Elkhart County Sheriff's Department this morning fearing a suspicious package was a bomb. He described the package as having a battery pack and a blinking red light lying on his desk at his place job at the MSC Industrial Supply distribution center in Elkhart. The employee was concerned about the item and took it outside and threw it in a ditch on the north side of the business. Officers arrived and evacuated the immediate area as a precautionary measure.

  • Carbon Monoxide Awareness Press Conference being held in Syracuse

    The Turkey Creek Fire Territory will hold a press conference on carbon monoxide awareness tomorrow at 10:30 in the morning. This meeting is in light of the recent tragic death of a 12 year old Syracuse boy.Two gas powered generators were used in the residence, where the boy lived, as an alternative power source. Chief Mickey Scott, Turkey Creek Fire Territory, will explain sources of the deadly gas in the home.

  • Saint Joseph Department of Public Safety warns of possible scam

    The Department of Public safety is warning businesses of a possible scam. The person is calling businesses and saying they work for Indiana Michigan Power. A report was taken yesterday from a local business owner who received a call from a person claiming to be a representative for I&M. The caller informed the owner of a missed payment for their electric bill. The caller then said the power to their business would be shut off in 45 minutes unless the fee was paid in cash.
