  • South Bend adds "book huts" for readers on northwest side of city

    South Bend added new mini-libraries, or "book huts" on the city's northwest side Wednesday. Three of the book huts were unveiled by Councilmen Derek Dieter and Tim Scott in an effort to promote literacy. The little libraries allow readers, young and old, to borrow a book or drop one off. Councilman Dieter says he'd like to eventually have 75 to 100 huts around the city. The huts are located at Portage and Vassar, at Muessel Park and Freemont Park.

  • Indiana Michigan Power fueling Habitat for Humanity via donation

    Indiana Michigan Power donated $150,000 to Habitat for Humanity of St. Joseph County to assist South Bend's "1,000 Houses in 1,000 Days" initiative. Mayor Pete Buttigieg created the Vacant and Abandoned Housing Initiative in February 2013 to address the large amount of empty homes in the city. Indiana Michigan Power donated the funds. President and Chief Operating Officer for Indiana Michigan Power, Paul Chodak says they believe what Habitat is doing is amazing.
